The Vaccines interview: FOCUS on Freddie Cowan

We promised you a surprise a few day ago, we kept our commitments. In exclusivity for The Vaccines RaRaRa, Freddie Cowan (the guitarist of the band) kindly accepted to answer to some of our questions and we are grateful for it. Without further delay, here is the interview (nb: when a words appears in pink or blue, it means that we inserted a link).

Can you tell me more about you ?
Peux-tu nous en dire plus sur toi ?

My name is Freddie Cowan, I was born in London and spent most of my childhood living in Vauxhall. My parents were both musicians at some point in their lives so I was lucky enough to have a couple of instruments in the house and from about thirteen I started playing guitar. My heros then were Howlin' Wolf and Lightnin Hopkins

Mon nom est Freddie Cowan, je suis né à Londres et j'ai passé la majeure partie de mon enfance à Vauxhall. Mes parents ont été tous les deux musiciens à certaines périodes de leur vie. J'ai donc eu la chance de vivre dans une maison où il y avait pas mal d'instruments. Du coup, à l'âge de treize ans environ, j'ai commencé à jouer de la guitare. Mes héros étaient Howlin' Wolf et Lightnin Hopkins.

Which are your favorite bands/artists ever ? What artists or bands inspired you ?

Quels sont tes artistes ou groupes préférés ? Quels sont ceux qui t'ont le plus influencé ?

"Neu!" were pioneers of the "krautrock" movement in the 1970s in Germany. One half of the group was drummer Klaus Dinger who made the "motorik" beat famous, something so simple and so effective which really sums up the brilliance of "Neu!". Another favourite artist is Cliff Gallup who was guitarist for Gene Vincent's group : The Blue Caps. He was a master player but had an unlucky personal life that saw him fall out the music world as fast as he got in it. Listen to "Be Bop A Lula" or "You Told a Fib" by Gene Vincent, instant classics. Cliff signature sound is a "slap back" effect that uses an echo unit he built himself, I still think this is most effective guitar effect ever used, whether it's Cliff or Scotty Moore. It was a sound that defined one of the most important eras for guitar and pop music.

"Neu!" ont été les pionners du mouvement "krautrock" dans les années 70 en Allemagne. L'un des deux membres du groupe était le batteur Klaus Dinger, qui a rendu le battement "motorik" célèbre, quelque chose de si simple et de si efficace qui résume parfaitement le son de "Neu!". Cliff Gallup, qui était guitariste pour le groupe de Gene Vincent (The Blue Caps) est aussi un artiste que j'apprécie beaucoup. C'était un très bon guitariste, mais il eu peu de chance dans sa vie personnelle, ce qui fait qu'il a disparu du monde de la musique aussi rapidement qu'il en est apparu. Ecoutez "Be Bop A Lula" ou "You Told a Fib", ce sont des classiques. La signature de Cliff est un effet de "slap back" qui utilise un élément d'écho qu'il a construit lui-même. Je pense que c'est l'effet de guitare le plus efficace jamais utilisé, que ce soit Cliff ou par Scotty Moore. Ce son défini l'une des ères les plus importantes pour la guitare et pour la musique pop.

As that's the beginning of the year and so that's the moment to make a 2010 ranking, which is/are your favorite 2010 album(s) ?
Comme nous sommes en début d'année et que c'est le moment propice pour établir un classement, peux-tu nous dire quels ont été tes albums préférés en  2010 ?

Tame Impala - Innerspeaker (VIDEO)

I don't know much about this band except they are on Modular Records and they come from Australia but I heard this album and it blew my head off straight away. Psychedelic rock out of it's decade is not something thats easy to get right but Tame Impala so effortlessly nail it with this debut, while modernising it at the same time. It reminds me of a great british psychedelic band from the late 60s called "July" but they also have this shoegaze' element which is something thats really close to me. Definitely my no.1 of 2010. "Electric Ummagumma" by Pantomime Horse is another favourite of 2010.

Tame Impala - Innerspeaker (VIDEO)

Je ne sais pas grand-chose à propos de ce groupe excepté le fait qu'ils sont sur Modular Records et qu'ils viennent d'Australie. Mais dès que j'ai entendu cet album, j'ai été complètement scotché. Le rock psychédélique n'est pas quelque chose de facile à faire actuellement, mais Tame Impala a réussi son coup sans faire d'efforts tout en le modernisant. Il me font penser à l'un des plus grands groupes psychédélique anglais qui s'appelait "July" mais ils incluent aussi des sonorités shoegaze qui est quelque chose qui m'est familié.
C'est définitivement mon album préféré de l'année 2010. "Electric Ummagumma" de Pantomime horse est aussi un de mes albums préférés de 2010.


How did you feel playing your first gig in France December 17th ? Was it important for you ?
Quel effet ça t'as fait de jouer à Paris ? Était-ce important pour toi ?

Paris was one of my favourite shows so far, It was our first show anywhere outside of the UK which made it a real experience, and we made a lot of friends...

Paris était de loin l'un de mes meilleurs concerts. C'était notre premier concert dans un pays autre que l'Angleterre, ce qui constitue une réelle expérience. Cela nous a également permis de nous faire pleins d'amis...

And what about The Vaccines ?

How The Vaccines is born ? How did you meet ?
Comment The Vaccines est né ? Comment vous êtes vous rencontrés ?

Justin and I had a friend who had a rehearsal space and we were both in the middle of a lost summer. We started going to the rehearsal space and straight away it was so exciting. It really didn't matter if we never made it out of that room, the vand mattered to us and gave us direction. We kept meeting whenever we could and after a while we found Arni and then Pete. When we first played together they had the same feelings. As soon as we could we locked ourselves away in a room for a couple of months and got enough songs together to play live. The name came last, after our first shows. We started with names like "The Catholics" and "Red Indian". I guess the rest you know about...

Justin et moi avions un ami qui avait une salle de répétition et nous n'avions tous les deux rien à faire de l'été. Nous avons commencé à jouer dans cette salle de répétition et ça a été tout de suite très excitant. Ça n'avait absolument aucune importance si ce que nous jouions dans cette salle n'en sortirait jamais. Ce projet de groupe comptait beaucoup pour nous et nous donnait un nouvel objectif dans notre vie. Nous essayions de nous voir autant que possible et après quelques temps, Arni et Pete nous ont rejoints. Lorsque nous avons joué tous ensemble pour la première fois, ils ont ressenti exactement les mêmes sensations que nous. Nous sommes restés enfermés dans une pièce autant que possible pendant quelques mois, jusqu'à ce que nous ayons assez de chansons pour pouvoir jouer en concert. Le nom du groupe est venu après nos premiers concerts. Nos premiers noms étaient entre autre "The Catholics" ou encore "Red Indian". J'imagine que la suite vous la connaissez...

And the last question : How do you comprehend 2011 ? How does it feel to be one of the most anticipated band of the year knowing you didn't even released an album yet ?
Et la dernière question : Comment appréhendes-tu 2011 ? Quel effet ça te fait d'être dans un des groupes les plus attendus de l'année 2011 alors que vous n'avez même pas sorti votre premier album ?

I would like people to see the whole picture first but I'm confident in what we do it's not supposed to be for everybody so the anticipation really doesn't effect us.

J'aurais aimé que les gens écoutent le disque avant de se faire une idée sur le groupe mais je suis confiant dans ce que nous avons fait. Et puis ce disque n'est pas censé toucher tout le monde donc l'anticipation ne nous affecte pas vraiment.
